 It's used to populate the Get Info dialog for a contact.  I just checked
 and I see the same behavior from GTalk.

 My guess is that their servers *only* store the image (extracted and in a
 binary form) and throw all other fields away.  The best way to deal with
 this, I guess, would be to not expose a "Set Info" option for GTalk
 accounts (which would probably induce whining and be bad if they ever
 enabled that functionality).
