Comment:

 Third-party plugins already exist for this, as you've pointed out.
 Furthermore, you can use a buddy pounce to display an alert on those
 buddies whose presence you care about.

 That said, for Guifications, you can set the theme for each of your groups
 to "None" by right-clicking the group and selecting "Guifications Theme",
 then set a specific theme for each buddy.  Guifications is a third-party
 plugin and thus not supported here.
