 I'd be open to such a plugin and I'm actually working on a configure flag
 that will simply override all known libc or otherwise DNS related function
 calls. That will solve the issues that we have for the TIMBB where we ship
 Pidgin as a component as we can easily build the binary. Sadly, this
 approach will not work for anyone else unless a vendor also builds with
 such a flag and there is no reason to enable such a flag by default...

 I'm not sure that I'm up for writing an entire plugin to solve this
 problem in the next few days; I'm happy to share whatever hacks I create
 though.
