Comment:

 The problem is that your OS (probably !NetworkManager) is reporting that
 you don't have a network connection available.

 Fixing your configuration so that !NetworkManager correctly reports your
 network connectivity will resolve the problem, alternatively, you can
 start pidgin with the `-f` flag to bypass the network connection checking
 or even uninstall networkmanager.
