 I can verify that this issue is still present in 2.7.10.  After I updated
 and logged in, my friend asked me why the first letter in my display name
 was a question mark.  I checked, and sure enough, it was different than it
 was supposed to be.

 Don't think the issue here is just with Chinese characters, but could
 possibly be with all symbols and non-English characters.

 Upon reconnection of the affected screenname if the display name isn't
 changed from the symbol glitched one, the display name got reset to my
 login address.  Changing it back to what it was before upgrading just set
 the first character back to a question mark.
