 I can't believe I wrote 'You can pidgin'. Wow. Sorry about that.

 So ping to the various talk#.l servers works but telnet to them (on port
 5222) just hangs? (I'm assuming if you leave the telnet command running it
 eventually gives up and times out also, correct?)

 If that's the case that means something is blocking your access to those
 servers on those ports (or just access out on those ports entirely).

 Are you on a university or company network of some sort?
