Comment:

 The fact that you can connect to AIM is immaterial, as is the fact that
 you can use the gmail web interace.

 The fact that you used to be able to use pidgin only indicates that
 something on the network changed. You may be able to tell pidgin to use
 port 443 and "old-style SSL" (instead of 5222) and get it to work. But
 your best bet might be to ask your network admistrators what (if anything)
 has changed and whether this is intentionally blocked.
