Comment:

 I'm going to assume that "Close/Force Quit" dialog is blocking input into
 other applications if that is the only thing you can click on while it is
 up. I'm assuming that's what you mean by "basically everything in GDM
 stops working" as opposed to meaning something more like that once that
 dialog appears your entire environment is dead until you switch to a
 console and restart gdm.

 You can run pidgin via gdb from a console to get the backtrace if that is
 what you need to do to get it to work. You will simply need to set the
 DISPLAY environment variable to the correct value before running 'gdb
 pidgin'. You could also start pidgin like normal and then attach gdb to
 pidgin from a console (no need to set DISPLAY) in this case). Either way
 when pidgin crashes if you switch back to the console you should have a
 working gdb prompt you can get the backtrace from.

 On a side note, are you using any plugins to start new conversations or
 open the conversation window for new incoming messages? Like the plugin
 for gnome-do for pidgin or anything like that?
