> I'm going to assume that "Close/Force Quit" dialog is blocking input
into other applications if that is the only thing you can click on while
it is up. I'm assuming that's what you mean by "basically everything in
GDM stops working" as opposed to meaning something more like that once
that dialog appears your entire environment is dead until you switch to a
console and restart gdm.

is what you need to do to get it to work. You will simply need to set the
DISPLAY environment variable to the correct value before running 'gdb
pidgin'. You could also start pidgin like normal and then attach gdb to
pidgin from a console (no need to set DISPLAY) in this case). Either way
when pidgin crashes if you switch back to the console you should have a
working gdb prompt you can get the backtrace from.

open the conversation window for new incoming messages? Like the plugin
for gnome-do for pidgin or anything like that?
Deryni, your assume is wrong. :) Basically everything stops working (and I
mean everything, I can't even click the Force Quit button, it does
nothing), until I restart gdm from console.
I tried to attach it to a running Pidgin but it crashed, so setting the
DISPLAY to ":0.0" was the right way to make it possible to do a backtrace.
As for your last question: I am not sure about this. I mean, it's almost a
stock Ubuntu 10.04 with the newest Pidgin from PPA (2.7.9, updated some
days ago). When this crash happens, I open the conversation window from
the Notification area, from that mail icon. Someone writes me, icon
switches to green color, I click it, his name appears on the dropdown
list, I click, and it opens the conversation window itself.
I do not have gnome-do or any other special stuff that alters the stock
user interface of this Ubuntu.
Backtrace attached, tell me if I can help more. :)
PS: Happy new year to the crew!
