 How are you viewing the older conversations when they fail to work in your
 second bullet point versus how you are viewing them in your third bullet
 point when they do work? I'm assuming the former is via pidgin's View Log
 and the latter is in your browser directly?

 This sounds like you have a custom outgoing message font and your buddies
 have custom incoming fonts, both of which support the characters you are
 using, whereas your main UI font may not (though without a bit more
 information that is just speculation).

 Can you get screenshots of the various places this works and doesn't work?
