 I think the last point may be related to the environment of the dev who
 generated the tarballs and varying versions of pkg-config (the --cflags
 --libs on error appears to be a very recent change in pkg-config,

 Other than having one of us running Sid generate the tarballs, do you see
 a useful workaround that we as upstream could implement?
