 I began experiencing this (or a similar) bug in Pidgin 2.9.0 on Ubuntu
 10.10.

 The problem manifested itself after the network connection was momentarily
 dropped and the account reconnected. At this point using the /nick command
 did not produce any feedback and Pidgin did not associate the nick with
 myself; nevertheless, messages sent by me were still displayed as if
 coming from the new nick. Moreover, the nicks of people who left the
 channel did not clear from the user list, leading to duplicate and bogus
 nicks (at one point there were 10 of the same nick on the channel, 12 of
 another and 5 of a third one, all of which tend to timeout and reconnect
 often). Closing and reopening the chat window fixed the issue.

 Disabling Join/Part Hiding, IRC Helper and Irssi Features plugins did not
 help, so this is probably not plugin-related.
