 Additional note:  Just realized that Fedora did put an updated package
 out:

 pidgin-2.9.0-1.fc15.x86_64
 libpurple-2.9.0-1.fc15.x86_64
 }}}
 Above tests were with the newer version, not the 2.8.0 I originally
 reported, however, all symptoms related to this issue appear to be the
 same.
