Comment:

 Does the number of groups change? Is it steadily increasing? If you look
 at the blist.xml file is the buddy/group there multiple times? If you quit
 pidgin and edit the blist.xml file to remove all (or all but one) copy of
 the buddy/group do the extra copies return next time you log in?
