 Working is not the problem, not being horrible is.

 And the firefox addons site most certainly did (it is possible they don't
 anymore though I doubt it) some minimal validation but they also don't
 ship binary which makes the job significantly simpler (at least
 conceptually), especially since firefox also happens to be the environment
 that actually evaluates and runs the extensions whereas with pidgin
 plugins that would be the actual OS, etc.
