Comment(by lanwin):

 No that is not quite right. Firefox plugins itself are no binaries. But
 the can ship with binaries which they call. And plugins have the same
 rights as the Firefox process. And also that the plugins are not binary,
 they can even bring Firefox down.

 But again, that is not a problem of a plugin repository and auto update
 mechanism. You offer plugin support. But you can not avoid that a user
 installs a plugin which can crash Pidgin and you also can not prevent the
 user from sending you a bug report because the user can not imaging that
 the crash happens because of the plugin.

 Yes it is possible to prevent that with hosting the plugins in a sub
 process a la Chrome. But that is another problem, not the one which is
 brought by the plugin repository.

 In contrast, that would help solving such problems because the user has a
 chance to a new version of the plugin which maybe solve the problem.

 I think for the beginning it has not to be a full appstore with auto
 installing and co. But a new version notification for Pidgin and its
 plugins would also be help to not have 4 years old plugins installed.
