 I was not aware (and without looking find it slightly doubtful) that
 firefox extensions can ship with external binaries like that but who
 knows. That's somewhat extraneous to the core point.

 And no, we cannot prevent people from installing plugins that spam their
 friends, steal their passwords, lock out their accounts, delete their
 entire hard drives, or eat their babies (or kittens). What we can do is
 not be responsible for giving those plugins to them in the first place
 though and that's the point.

 Pidgin ships with a release notification plugin for new versions of pidgin
 itself.

 Nothing stops plugins from implementing similar mechanisms for themselves
 either.

 A well written patch which standardized on a URL (either rooted off the
 plugin information URL or added as a new plugin information field) which
 pidgin (or better the release notification, or similar, plugin) could
 request to determine if new versions of the plugin were available would
 stand a fair chance of being accepted I think.
