 Have you tried asking your friend if they have intentionally sized their
 outgoing text to a smaller size? They may have done so accidentally (I
 believe the official clients often hide such mistakes from their users by
 deciding not to honor them locally but sending them normally).

 If they have done it intentionally, or they claim they haven't done it and
 attempting to reset their font size preference doesn't fix it you could
 always just ignore incoming formatting in pidgin (all or nothing
 unfortunately).
