 What "libpurple notification" are you talking about here? Do you mean the
 libnotify popups? I'm assuming you do since you mention that in some
 places and I'm assuming the libpurple references are errors.

 That yellow icon in the buddy list window is normal. The overlap is
 because your buddy list isn't wide enough to display it normally. (Widen
 the window and you will see the overlap stop.)

 Does unloading the libnotify plugin prevent this from happening?

 Does only using the icon in the buddy list window prevent this from
 happening?
