 The only thing i've noticed is that it seems to have something to do with
 privacy settings.  My friends had their stuff set super private, which
 seems to have caused me to get blocked, even though i wasn't showing as
 such in Pidgin.

 The workaround i found was to get them to install Windows Live Messenger,
 which showed me as blocked, and unblock me from there.  Once they did
 that, all was well (for them and me, anyway).  It *might* be possible to
 just have them block and then unblock in Pidgin, which i'd think would get
 things back in sync.
