New description:

 Every once in awhile, I am not receiving IMs from people. In the most
 recent instance, I closed and restarted, then received all the messages. I
 also am appearing offline periodically.

 I can't find any rhyme or reason to it, and obviously am constantly
 wondering whether or not people are contacting me.

 Maybe related, maybe not, but before this happened I was unable to send
 links in my IMs to users. I would send, then the user would not receive
 the IM. They are using Pidgin as well.

 I am on Windows XP. Also, using Yahoo and Gchat.
