 I have the same problem and this occurs on both, MSN plugin and the MSN-
 pecan third party.
 To me it's not new, ocurred since the 2.7.2 I believe. I tried every
 possible method to avoid it, clean instal, plugins, changing the port,
 using HTTP Method, allowing direct connections, disallowing direct
 connections, done the same things on the MSN-pecan.
 It's weird, I don't believe that is a protocol bug, since I found about
 the debugging I saw that for any file that is not an image Pidgin will not
 send anything because it can't generate Thumbnails. If it's an image it
 try the connection but then it doesn't even get the image, it send a
 series of 37 message atempts but it won't reach buddy.
 This way I can't send anything, I really like Pidgin because its organized
 logging and being lightweight but I might have to get back to Live
 Messenger 2009 hacked to not force update. :(
