Comment:

 I am logging into the Yahoo mail site (and have done so for a long time in
 conjunction with Pidgin) but I am not logged into the messenger that is
 provided by their mail interface.

 A few hours after I submitted this ticket yesterday the problem seems to
 have disappeared (I didn't change anything on my computer).  I haven't
 seen it happen today yet either.  When it was happening it happened about
 every 15 min or so.
