 I have been watching this bug for a long time without officially joining
 and I think I realized what is wrong.

 At one point, it was suggested "I'm still not sure why leaving the room
 open isn't acceptable, but I don't have to.".

 "What is the purpose of closing the window in that case? Why not just
 leave it open and use the taskbar flashing to indicate new messages? "

 As far as I can tell in my testing, if I minimize an xmpp chat room, and
 messages are sent to it, the taskbar icon does not flash.  Perhaps others
 could chime in if this is the case for them.

 If the behavior of leaving the room open was to have the window flash and
 the taskbar icon change color then everything would be fine.
