Comment:

 Based on the debug output there, it looks like something outside of Pidgin
 is closing the connection - either the server itself is hanging up on you,
 or something between you and the server is closing the connection (e.g.
 this could be a firewall or a network problem).

 The behavior you're seeing where "Google talk" is switched to XMPP is as
 expected - google talk uses the XMPP protocol.
