 pidgin does disconnect if it doesn't get a ping response but that takes
 more than an instant so I don't think that is a ping disconnect. That
 looks more like the server is not liking the ping (or the silence or
 something).

 Yes. Those are values that should really only be used when necessary to
 work around normal connection issues. You should try removing connect
 server entirely, setting the port to 5222, and turning off old-style ssl
 and seeing if that connects. If it doesn't you should check out
