 I have a simple fix for the second part of this problem (i.e. properly
 handling *s or _s that show up at the end of a message), and I will attach
 a patch in a moment, assuming my account has permissions to so (I am new
 here!).  It does not fix the outgoing message issue, nor does it fix
 pidgin's current formatting in other cases where I feel it should (e.g.
 around punctuation), but it does make things a little nicer.

 If someone can point me to a straightforward way to locate word boundaries
 for unicode/non-english strings I can improve this further.
