 On my copy of Adium 1.5, it was due to the fact that my privacy options
 were set incorrectly for the account. It would only happen when I logged
 back into my account (after sleep or an intentional logout), not when I
 started Adium up for the first time.

 I went to the Adium menu, Privacy Settings, selected the account and then
 selected "block certain contacts" (privacy option 4; it had defaulted to
 "allow anyone," AKA privacy option 1, and seems to on successive
 login/logouts as well). After resizing the window it displayed the user I
 had blocked the authorization request of in the list. I closed the privacy
 settings window, logged out and back in, and the authorization request did
 not reappear.

 The problem is likely a bug with the YIM block list management.
