 I'm attaching an updated version of '''andy753421''''s patch, which does
 use the parser changes '''elb''' suggested. It's still mostly his work,
 except for looking for "AUTHENTICATE", a couple of debug messages and
 extra comments.

 And, fwiw, I think the rest of the patch is good and should be accepted.
