 I have checked GtkSpell3 and it seems that it can be
 [[http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=30151968|compiled
 with Gtk2-only]].

 So there is the option to adapt Pidgin to work with GtkSpell3 or try to
 convince and patch GtkSpell2 upstream and wait for a release so it gets
 the necessary get-language function.
