 By 'AIM gateway' do you mean you have an AIM account set up in pidgin?
 Assuming that's what you mean (and my quick testing confirms this problem)
 then this has to be an AIM server "feature". Presumably their was some
 exploit/problem they are filtering for. The various IM services have done
 things like this over the years though I don't know that I am aware of AIM
 having done this before.
