Ah, yes, I misunderstood the point of this plugin. Sorry about that.

Leaving it connected just means it has to get called and return when
conversations are deleted. If you don't do anything in the function then
 it doesn't need to exist.

If you have three IM accounts enabled in pidgin and your friend Fred also
has three IM accounts for himself and you have all three of his accounts
added to your buddy list you can combine them in pidgin into one Contact.
If you do this than their will only be one conversation window for
conversations with any of those individual buddies/accounts. If you have
that conversation window open and Fred switches accounts pidgin will
simply switch, internally, which account is in use and continue on
 normally.

Your plugin doesn't take that into account. Though that matters a lot less
when showing the local buddy icon than it does when showing the protocol
icons since that is less likely to change between account.

My 'why' question was tailored much more to what I thought you were doing
than to what you are doing. Though I still don't know that I think the
goal here is all that worth it. If the lack of ones own icon is enough to
make someone unable or unwilling to use pidgin I think you are in for many
other, more major, problems as well. (I've also, personally, never
understood wanting to constantly see your own icon but <shrug>.)
