Comment:

 It looks like it's hanging trying to query your proxy configuration from
 Gnome:
 `gconftool-2 -g /system/proxy/mode` for Gnome2
 `gsettings get org.gnome.system.proxy mode` for Gnome3

 I'd recommend looking into your gnome proxy configuration - perhaps there
 is a setting about disabling PAC autoconfiguration or something.

 I don't see a way we can make those calls asynchronous without changing
 API.
