 so, Here is what I did that is working for me;
 1. run pidgin from the icon and also, 2.  run the "pidgin -d" command the
 buddy list UI shows up.

 it complains that a client is already running but the UI shows up after
 that.

 Exiting because another libpurple client is already running.
