 This is the setting that does it for me.  If I turn this on then I can
 receive one message.  When trying to close the chat window it will go
 blank like jeff_themovie said on the first close button click.  The chat
 window will actually close the second time you click on the close button.

 Once I have closed the broken chat window the next message I receive will
 crash pidgin.  If I leave the chat window open and don't try and close it
 things will work find.  Also if I don't try to hide new IM conversation
 windows it will work fine.

 Hopefully this will help narrow things down for you.
