Comment:

 This will happen when there are multiple networks connecting the two
 machines (e.g. IPv4 and IPv6) and the presence discovery happens on one
 network and the conversation connection attempt happens on the the other
 network.

 You'll need to look at the debug log from when the presence discovery
 occurs to see if this is the cause.
