Comment (by dx):

 In this case it's probably not a "max retry count" but the fact that
 EXTERNAL is supported by the server but you're not actually sending a SSL
 client certificate associated with your account, so pidgin tries EXTERNAL
 and gets authentication failure back.

 That would be a different bug though. Does this mean the original
 description of this ticket is wrong?
