 As far as I see, pidgin half-supports tags now:

 * if an xmpp contact belongs to multiple groups on the server -- pidgin
 will also show this user in multiple groups.
 * you can NOT place a contact in multiple groups using pidgin. This has to
 be done using a different client, or on the server.

 What needs to be done is a _UI_ to place a contact in multiple groups.
 Currently you can "Move to" a contact to a group. Checkboxes should be
 used instead, or a confirmation dialog "remove user from the previously
 assigned groups?".
