 With what protocol(s)? (i.e. is it a protocol that doesn't support the
 Away status)

 What settings do you have set on the Tools->Preferences->Status/Idle page?

 Does Pidgin show as 'Away' in the buddy list, from the status selector
 dropdown at the bottom?
