 Thanks very much for getting back to me! I'm using Hangouts, but I have
 New mail notification switched off there. The other protocols I use are
 Twitter and Facebook; I guess Twitter is getting new tweets from my
 timeline fairly often, but it doesn't seem to pop up new messages for
 anything except DMs. Might either of those protocols be causing this?
