 If I have a contact that I can reach through several protocols and I merge
 them together, I need to set all of the individual contacts to "show when
 offline" in order for the merged contact to be shown when they are all
 offline.

 This is not what I would expect.  If I have a contact that I can reach
 through, say 3 protocols and I select one of them as "show when offline"
 and all 3 are offline, I would expect to see that contact in my contact
 list with the one available (offline) protocol in my contact list.
