 This is still an open and annoying issue for me.

 The most important aspect is that the buddy list pops up when changing
 monitors with xrandr.
 Not only that, but it pops up "in red", as if a nick highlight had
 happened in a chat.
 It makes my "chat" desktop flare up red only from plugging the external
 monitor, requiring to go to the buddy list and undo the alert, in order to
 be able to see real nick highlights and alert me to the chats.

 This issue is very annoying in everyday use, not only when reconfiguring
 the i3 config. I'm sad to see that nothing has happened here in 6 years
 (!!)
