I think that the current logging start/stop behavior is good. In my
case, I leave Pidgin running for days and days at a time, and having a
log of "everything a user said in that Pidgin session" is less useful
than a log sorted into a number of conversations. To my mind, closing
the IM tab is a good indicator of "conversation is over; file it
away".
