I didn't mean to "cry out against it," so to speak; I just don't see it as being
useful.  I, like you, do not have that large of a buddy list.  I also don't use
IM at work (thankfully--I'm tied to enough garbage there without adding IM to
the mix).

That said, I don't see a problem with providing some tools (in the form of API,
data structures, etc., of course) to enable plugins to do such filtering or
limiting.  I also don't see a need to implement this fully within Pidgin when
plugins could easily be much more flexible than our single implementation would be.

Given that we've seen at least two different interpretations of how searching
should be done, I think it's probably best that we provide the infrastructure
and let other people decide what to do UI-wise.  Either that, or provide an
infrastructure in the core for a plugin to filter the buddy list and use a
filtered pane or dialog or some such UI idea to display the filtered list
provided by the plugin.
