It not only makes the contact alias not show up, but also removes the
typing indicators that were effected by the contact alias changing
colours. 

Showing the tab or not based on whether the window has other tabs or
not is inconsistent, and I find myself having to have one extra tab
open (as dummy) just to avoid this situation.
