Actually, Twitter is not a protocol - it's a web service for "micro-blogging" (www.twitter.com).
However, it accepts messages from various IM protocols (I'm using Jabber) - so it's a bit like publishing posts on your WordPress blog via e-mail.

I'd prefer if there was an optional setting for displaying the total character count - not the amount of characters remaining.
