Without actually experimenting, can the "insert_text" signal be used to
trigger the update for displaying the character count?  Or the
"key_press_event" signal?

It would be nice if in the menubar above the entry widget in the gtkconv
window, on the right-most side, was the character count of the entry
widget.

If that sounds reasonable, I'll grab the latest Pidgin source and
implement it and submit the patch.
