Authentication can be done with a buddy pounce as is clearly documented in the
FAQ's Protocol-Specific Questions section
(http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Protocol%20Specific%20Questions). There is
also the IRC Helper plugin from the Purple Plugin Pack
(http://plugins.guifications.org/trac/wiki/PluginPack) that can do automatic
authentication and suppression of some messages.
