unable to connect to gchat/not behind a router

I have been periodically unable to connect to my gchat account through
pidgin (running version 2.6.6), and all the error messages I get and
the research I have done suggests a problem with a router however I am
not behind one.  This problem previously corrected itself by updating
versions.

Here is the text from the debug window:

returned because the timeout period expired. (1460).
(13:52:46) proxy: Error connecting to gmail.com:5222 (Connection timed out.).
(13:52:46) proxy: Connection attempt failed: Connection timed out.

(14:03:31) dnssrv: Couldn't look up SRV record. This operation
returned because the timeout period expired. (1460).
