Deleted saved status reappears

I do appreciate your advice, but I have done that a couple of times to
no avail.  Could it be pulling a cache from a jabber server, or does it
not work that way?

Then I've no clue. Obviously your Pidgin installation/package is
corrupted. Worst case - uninstall, reinstall.
